VideoParl untersucht, wie Abgeordnete in deutschen Landesparlamenten und im Bundestag kommunizieren — nicht nur, was sie sagen, sondern auch, wie sie es sagen. Auf Basis von über 30.000 Stunden Video aus allen 16 Landesparlamenten und dem Bundestag (2005–2023) entsteht ein vollständig durchsuchbarer multimodaler Datensatz, der Text-, Audio- und Videoanalyse verbindet. Ein automatisiertes Verfahren erfasst Stimmlage, Gesichts-Embeddings, Kopfhaltung und Gestik einzelner Redebeiträge – sowie diskrete Emotionen, Stimmung und populistische Rhetorik im Text – und verknüpft sie mit etablierten politikwissenschaftlichen Konzepten wie Salienz und Parteienstimmung.
VideoParl examines how members of parliament in Germany's state legislatures and the Bundestag communicate — not only what they say, but how they say it. Drawing on more than 30,000 hours of video from all 16 state parliaments and the Bundestag (2005–2023), the project builds a fully searchable multimodal dataset that combines text, audio, and video analysis. An automated pipeline captures vocal pitch, facial embeddings, head pose, and gestures at the level of individual speeches — alongside discrete emotions, sentiment, and populist rhetoric in the text — linking these signals to established political science concepts such as issue salience and party sentiment.

Methodology
VideoParl erschließt Parlamentsdebatten aus 16 deutschen Landesparlamenten sowie dem Bundestag im Zeitraum 2005–2023. Aus Video- und Audiomaterial werden gesprochene Worte, Stimmlage, Mimik und Körperhaltung extrahiert. Ein automatisiertes Verfahren annotiert acht politische Emotionen und misst Themen-Salienz sowie Parteienstimmung mittels multimodaler Analyse.
VideoParl curates parliamentary debates from all 16 German state parliaments and the Bundestag, covering the period 2005–2023. From video and audio recordings, the project extracts spoken words, vocal tone, facial expressions, and body language. An automated pipeline annotates eight political emotions and measures topic salience and party sentiment through multimodal analysis.
